University of Thessaly
The University of Thessaly ranks among the 5 best Greek universities. According to the National Documentation Center, the University of Thessaly is among the 10 Greek institutions that have achieved the highest EU funding to date under Horizon 2020. Specifically, the University of Thessaly implements 25 collaborative research projects, 5 of which as coordinator, with EU funding of almost 7 million euros. The Department of Informatics with Applications in Biomedicine (www.dib.uth.gr) has been operating since the 2004-2005 academic year. It is a pioneering department in Applied Sciences because it covers a wide range in both Informatics and Biomedicine. The Department provides students with knowledge of Informatics along with a parallel specialization, including the use of Information Systems in Medical Technology and research in Biomedical Technology and Bioinformatics. One of the Department’s laboratories is the “Intelligent Computing Systems (ICS)” lab, which focuses on developing computational models and their effective implementation, aiming at knowledge discovery, generation of conclusions, and information retrieval. The core research of ICS lies at the intersection of Informatics, Mathematics, and Statistics, and focuses on applications in medicine, industry, social sciences, and economics.

University of Ioannina
The University of Ioannina conducts research (basic and applied) as well as experimental development in all fields and subjects covered by its Departments and Schools. Special emphasis is placed on interdisciplinary applied research and experimental development programs that are of interest to industry, economy, and society, at both national and regional levels. Research is mainly funded by Community Support Frameworks (CSF I, II, III, NSRF 2007–2013, NSRF 2014–2020) via various Operational Programs, Territorial Cooperation Programs (INTERREG), the European Commission (FP6, FP7, HORIZON 2020, etc.), as well as the private sector. Many research projects are also conducted within the framework of international collaborations between research teams of the University of Ioannina and corresponding groups of institutions, companies, and organizations from other countries, both within and outside the European Union (USA, China, Russia, Israel, Turkey, etc.). The Pulmonology Clinic of the University of Ioannina treats patients with the full spectrum of respiratory diseases, including lung cancer. It has a bronchoscopy lab, which will soon include an endobronchial ultrasound (EBUS) system, as well as a complete pulmonary function laboratory. It runs weekly specialized clinics for Severe Asthma, COPD, Anti-Tuberculosis, Interstitial Diseases, and Sleep-Related Breathing Disorders. It has infrastructure to conduct interventional studies, including a specialized nurse.
